The love affair between Korean pop culture and I does not stop with Korean dramas. Let’s say that in my case dramas were a good getaway drug. After I was done with a few, I wanted to know where the strong stuff was. I had seen the kids were doing K-pop at conventions and while I initially thought that I was above it, a part of me was always wondering “what would it be like?”
Eventually, I gave up. I watched “She Was Pretty” and Choi Siwon’s face was so beautiful that I started watching all of Super Junior’s music videos. Do Kyungsoo pulled two amazing performances in two of my favorite dramas of all time, so naturally I started listening to EXO afterwards. Of course, I had heard about Girls’ Generation before (I recall watching the “I Got A Boy” music video back when it was released and thinking “What kind of crack is this?”) and I’d heard BTS’s “Blood, Sweat and Tears” on a loop at the last convention I attended. I heard songs playing in the background of scenes in dramas I was watching and I wanted to listen to them again. I started watching “Running Man” and idol guests would appear and say what group they were from, so I would take note of their name just so I could listen to “just one or two songs”.
